ATSA Sports Council

In April 2015, I was asked for my ideas for a local community project – when I was asked my opinion, I replied by saying,

“It’s no use asking me – I will not be using the facility, why don’t you ask the children?”

From this, the idea of a Sports Council was born! The idea became reality in June 2015 as children from different schools attended St. George’s Central for a ‘launch’ event. Schools had selected one boy and one girl to represent their school at meetings and events. Councillor Jo Platt and Trevor Barton MBE were present for the ‘launch’ of the council and, from this first short meeting, both were suitably impressed with the ideas and attitudes of the children.

ATSA Sports Council 2018/19

Members of the ATSA Sports Council recently met together to discuss ideas. Amongst their ideas was one about some new certificates which we were able to put in place ready for our next ATSA event.
Sports Council members were on hand to present Chris Jeffs from Brathay Trust with a cheque for £506 to support the ‘Buy-a-Bike’ appeal for Hinning House in the Lake District. The centre needs 24 new bikes and our donation will ensure that two more bikes are purchased for schools to use.
Funding secured by ATSA meant that children from different local schools could come together to work on a mosaic to be displayed at Shakerley Community Centre. Artist, Stephen Charnock was able to use some design idea children submitted at the Easter fun day to inspire the final design. The mosaic was finally installed in December 2018 and the children all came together to see their final work on display.

ATSA Sports Council 2015/16

The council meet each half term to discuss ideas and future projects. Some of the key tasks/activities that the ATSA Sports Council were involved with this year include:

*Setting up our ‘Code of Conduct’ for ATSA Sports Council members in our initial meeting – something we will be continuing to use this year and with all future councils;

*Thinking of ideas to support the building development of the Pelican Centre;

*Using their journalistic skills to interview Micky Higham, Cory Paterson and Harrison Hansen at a special event at Try Fitness;

*Attending the opening of the World Short Mat Bowling Championships in Leigh.
